West Central Community Unit School District #235 Board of Education met March 25

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The meeting was called to order by President Schaley at 6:00 p.m. in the District Office Conference Room. The following board members answered roll call: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Schaley, and Vancil. Board members Bigger and Higgins were absent. President Schaley declared a quorum present. Also present were Superintendent Day, J. Kirby, J. Zaiser, M. Nelson, student and the parents of student #27082. 

HEARING OFFICER 

Motion by Clark, seconded by Chockley to appoint President Schaley as the presiding hearing officer. On roll call the following members voted aye: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, and Vancil. Schaley abstained. 4-0 Motion carried. 

CLOSED SESSION 

Motion by Vancil, seconded by Gullberg to enter closed session pursuant to the Open Meeting Act - 5 ILCS 120/1 et seq. to hear a student discipline case at 6:01 p.m. Majority of Ayes by Voice Vote. Motion carried. 

The Board reconvened in the District Office conference room at 6:01 p.m. On roll call the following members were present: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Schaley, and Vancil. Also present were Superintendent Day, Jason Kirby, Joel Zaiser, Mallory Nelson, student and the parents of student #27082. Mr. Kirby, Mr. Zaiser and the parents of student #27082 left at 6:41 p.m. 

Motion by Chockley, seconded by Vancil to return to open session at 7:15 p.m. On Roll call the following members voted aye: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Schaley, and Vancil. 5-0 Motion carried. 

The Board reconvened in the District Office conference room at 7:15 p.m. On roll call the following members answered roll call: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Schaley, and Vancil. President Schaley declared a quorum present. Also present were Superintendent Day, K. Kirby, and J. Zaiser. 

ACTION ITEM 

Motion by Clark seconded by Gullberg that the 10-day out of school suspension for Student #27082 shall be upheld and that Student #27082 be expelled from West Central CUSD #235 for violating the District Student Handbook for violating the District Student Handbook by verbally threatening students in the classroom and threatening bodily harm of the student. This expulsion is in effect through December 31, 2025, and shall be in abeyance in order allow said student to attend an alternative placement as determined by the IEP team. Student #27082 may be eligible for reinstatement at West Central CUSD #235 on January 6, 2026, upon successful participation at the alternative school placement, successful psychological evaluation stating the student is not a threat to other students and a final IEP team decision. Until that time said student is not allowed on any West Central CUSD #235 campus or grounds for any reason. On roll call the following members voted aye: Schaley, Vancil, Chockley, Clark, and Gullberg. 5-0 Motion carried. 

ADJOURNMENT 

Motion by Clark, seconded by Vancil to adjourn at 7:18 p.m. Majority of Ayes by Voice Vote. Motion carried.
