LC-25-0201 Discuss Presentation by Dr. Kathryn Holliday

Chair Meiner thanked Staff for setting up this presentation, and thanked Dr. Holliday for travelling to us for the presentation.

Dr. Holliday gave a brief overview of her professional experience, and her approach to historic preservation. Dr. Holliday spoke on the benefits of mapping out treasured spaces in the community, engaging with the more recent past as a way to raise interest in historic preservation, tying sustainability into any preservation efforts, and working in tandem with other local organizations with shared goals (ex. Arts Center, Orpheum Theater, local schools, etc.).

Commission members and members of the public asked Dr. Holliday several questions about maintenance, involving young people in historic preservation, and how technology can help tell the stories of historic places. She offered examples of municipalities offering low-interest grants to assist property owners of historic structures with maintenance, and a San Antonio program where the local community college teaches a certification program on historic woodworking preservation with the hands-on piece of the program providing maintenance work to local historic structures.

For involving students in historic preservation, Dr. Holliday recommended giving them direct work on a small project, to foster ownership in the students.

There being no further business, Member Woolsey made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Member Sugai, approved by voice vote the meeting adjourned at 6:50 P.M.
