City of Galesburg Golf Advisory Commission met July 23

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Meeting was called to order by Dave Selkirk at 4:00 pm

Roll Call: Present: Members: Dave Selkirk, Stan Devlin, Bob Reedy, Jerry Reynolds, Rodney Bunch, Greenkeeper Matt Miles, Golf Professional Bryan Luedtke, Parks and Recreation Director Don Miles Council Liaison Steve Cheesman

Absent: None

Minutes: Minutes from the June meeting were approved, with a motion from Devlin, 2nd by Reedy.

Reports:

Parks and Recreation Director;

Director Miles reported that the bridge on hole #1 will be pushed back to 2025. Engineering staff have been short handed for awhile and do not have the time to work on the project. The drainage project is moving along, getting closer to going out to bid. Golf cart lease packets have been sent out.

Council Liaison:

Steve Cheesman reported that the City has a Strategic Planning session coming up and he wants to make sure that the golf course and other recreational facilities are part of the discussion. He also asked for input before the session from commissioners.

Greenkeeper;

Greenkeeper Miles reported that the greens were spiked, top-dressed with sand and brushed in. An application of products to prevent hydrophobic areas was applied and watered in. Four different irrigation leaks had to be repaired, 3 green, 6 green, 10 tee, and 18 tee. Storm damage clean up had to be performed on different occasions. Tees were verti-cut and top dressed with sand. Some in play waterway areas were cut down. Have been busy with turf applications, mowing, maintenance, and repairs. The Bunker Links Rules sign at the first tee received a freshcoat of stain.

Golf Professional;

Golf Professional Luedtke reported that 4,480 rounds were played in June, revenue was up just slightly from last year’s numbers. The weather has been great for business and the course has been very busy. 100 players competed in the Moneyball Tournament with $1,500 in merchandise credit being paid out. The course hosted the Knox County ELITE Volleyball with 48 players, which is a new outing, Rebels for a Cure 76 players, record turnout, All-City Men with 30 players, All-City Women with 20 players, Iowa Junior PGA, 96 players which was a record turnout, Peoria Sand Trappers with 96 players. Upcoming events, Abingdon-Avon Basketball with 76 players signed up and the All -City Junior. Season Pass totals are up ten from 2023 which marks six straight years of an increase is season pass sales.

New Business:

Member Devlin asked about getting an ATM machine installed at the Golf Shop. There have been numerous requests for this. Devlin also inquired about budgeting for a walk-in cooler to be installed behind the Golf Shop for added storage for products.

Member Reynolds asked if the meetings could be moved to a different day and possibly adding a meeting in February to be able to get information from staff before the season starts in March.

There was a discussion about expanding the Golf Shop or inquiring about the Masonic Lodge to have a larger seating area for outings.
