City of Galesburg Tree Commission met Oct. 9.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Meeting Called to Order: Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Elizabeth Varner, as no one else wanted to Chair the meeting in Ann’s absence.

Attendance: Members Present: Jane Easterly, Bill Sime, Dan Thompson City of Galesburg:Elizabeth Varner, Director of Parks and Recreation Don Miles -Superintendent of Parks Absent: Ann Pennington, Pat Trant

Minutes:

The minutes of the September 2023 meeting were approved with motions from Jane Easterly and Bill Sime.

Forestry Report:

A Forestry report was provided for September 2023. Don Miles, Parks Superintendent, explained that Forestry work has been slow due to the weather, projects and staff in Forestry. He explained that stumps are grinded out and landscaping is when the area is seeded later, in response to Dan Thompson.

Old Business:

Dan inquired about the Standish Park Tree Maps. Don Miles stated that this is a work in progress. Jane Easterly stated the Galesburg Public Library is still interested in planting trees in April and will discuss this as it gets closer to the date. Don stated that he will be looking at Bill Sime’s trees.

New Business:

None

Additional Comments: Jane inquired as to why the lake is so low. Don explained the lake is usually lowered 5’ for the health of the fish population. It is down an extra 3’ to work on the boat ramp. It is rain dependent as to when the lake will fill back in. Elizabeth Varner, Director of Parks and Recreation, stated that there have been compliments from boaters, and that Fishery and Conservation are pleased with our Fish Inventory. Jane also mentioned egret birds were at Lake Storey, migrating to West Indies. Bill Sime reminded everyone of the frost warning for tonight.
