City of Galesburg Tree Commission met July 10

City of Galesburg Tree Commission met July 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Meeting Called to Order: Meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. by Ann Pennington

Attendance: Members Present:

Jane Easterly, Ann Pennington, Bill Sime, Dan Thompson, Pat Trant,

City of Galesburg:

Elizabeth Varner, Director of Parks and Recreation

Don Miles, Superintendent of Parks

Guest: Tom Simkins, Project 350

Minutes:

The minutes of the June 2023 meeting were approved with the correction that Don Miles was not absent, and total trees planted for Project 350 should be 206 total and 91 for 2023 to date. The minutes were approved with motions from Pat Trant and Bill Sime.

Forestry Report:

Jane Easterly inquired about a dead ash tree at Joe E. Anderson Park area at Lake Storey as to how the City determines when to take a dead tree down. Jane would like to see the tree stay for the woodpeckers who are nesting in it. Dan Thompson suggested leaving the log after removing the limbs that could cause harm to people.

Old Business:

The Champion Tree Application is now on the website. Last month a guest, Ms. Ferren, asked about a tree at 59 Imperial Street. This tree was determined to be a locust, not an ash tree.

New Business: None

Citizen Comment: Raise up the tree canopy at Standish for increased security.

Standish Park:

The Tree Commission then walked to Standish Park to determine the height of the Tree Tags on the trees. It was determined to place the tags higher so they could not be as easy to remove by the public or vandalism. It was also determined to place the tags on the side close to the walk path so they are easier to find. The tree map was viewed, and Don will work at updating it.

Additional Comments: None

Meeting Adjourned: The meeting was adjourned.
