Knoxville Community Unit School District #202 Board of Education met May 1

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Community Unit School District #202, Knox County, met in a special meeting duly called and held May 1, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at 809 East Main Street, Knoxville, Illinois, which is within the boundaries of said District. The President called the meeting to order and directed that the roll be called. Upon roll being called, the following members were found to be present:

Dr. Harshbarger, Mrs. McCracken, Mr. Ratermann, Mrs. Rose, Mr. Scalf, Mrs. Young and Mr. Stearns

And the following absent:

Recognition of Visitors: Mallory Tolley, Megan Schaefer

Also present were: Ralph Grimm, Jenn Walter, Matt Maaske, Myles Stambaugh, Brad Jacobson Public Comments: None

It was moved by Member Young and seconded by Member McCracken to Approve the consent agenda, with 4.1.2 (Cook job description) removed.

AYE: Dr. Harshbarger, Mrs. McCracken, Mr. Ratermann, Mrs. Rose, Mr. Scalf, Mrs. Young, and Mr. Stearns

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

Discussion Items:

The board discussed a student cell phone policy for all three schools. There were questions regarding the levels of punishment and how many levels is too many. The high school does not do lunch detentions, but the junior high does. Mr. Stearns would like to see consistency in the look and feel of the policy for all three schools. Mr. Grimm would like to see a staff cell phone policy in place, but it might not get done in his remaining time here. He would like to have the student policy in place for next year.

The board asked about lockers and backpacks in the buildings. Students will no longer be able to carry their backpacks to class, they will need to utilize lockers.

It was moved by Member McCracken and seconded by Member Scalf to table and repost the position of the KHS Head Volleyball Coach.

AYE: Dr. Harshbarger, Mrs. McCracken, Mr. Ratermann, Mrs. Rose, Mr. Scalf, Mrs. Young, and Mr. Stearns

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

It was moved by Member Ratermann and seconded by Member Harshbarger to Approve the President Pro-Tem for the Board Reorganization meeting. Mr. Ratermann suggested Mr. Stearns be the President Pro-Tem.

AYE: Dr. Harshbarger, Mrs. McCracken, Mr. Ratermann, Mrs. Rose, Mr. Scalf, Mrs. Young, and Mr. Stearns

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

There being no further business to come before the Board, Mr. Stearns called for a voice vote that the meeting be adjourned Sine Die. The President put the question to the Board and the motion unanimously carried and the meeting so adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
