Carl Sandburg College Athletics: Shields’ Go-Ahead Slam Lifts Chargers to Split With No. 4 Madison

Jack Shields' go-ahead grand slam capped a seven-run sixth inning in Game 2 and helped lift the Carl Sandburg College baseball team to a split in its doubleheader with fourth-ranked Madison on Sunday at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Chargers began the weekend by dropping a pair of contests Friday at South Suburban.

KEY MOMENTS• The Chargers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair on an error at shortstop and adding another run on Frank Kelch's single to left.• South Suburban tied the game in the seventh on a leadoff double, a steal of third and an RBI groundout to push the contest to extra innings. The Bulldogs earned a walk-off win with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

SANDBURG STANDOUTStarting pitcher Connor Best allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. The righthander struck out six and walked four while throwing 53 of his 95 pitches for strikes.

SANDBURG STANDOUTBall finished the contest 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs. In addition to his grand slam, he added an RBI single in the fifth and a double in the seventh.

KEY MOMENTSUp 3-0 in the fourth, the WolfPack doubled their lead with three-run rally that started after the first two batters had been retired. Madison used back-to-back walks, a run-scoring error and a two-run single to pad its lead.

SANDBURG STANDOUTSBall and Kelch each went 2 for 3 as they combined for four of the Chargers' six hits.

KEY MOMENTS• Down 11-6 in the sixth, the Chargers staged a seven-run rally to take the lead. Kelch doubled and Michael Kleinhans singled before Hunter Caves brought in the first run with an RBI single to left. With two out, Ball singled to load the bases, and Bryce Brown drew a walk to force in a run. Another run scored to make it 11-9 as Van Heuklon's grounder to shortstop couldn't be handled. Shields followed with a grand slam to center as Sandburg grabbed its first lead since 1-0.• Madison's first two batters in the seventh reached base, but a popped-up bunt turned into a double play. A walk followed by a hit batsman and another base on balls forced in a run, but Kelch got the final out on a liner to Kleinhans at second to close out the victory.

SANDBURG STANDOUTHighlighted by his go-ahead slam, Shields finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs. He also hit a solo homer in the second to open the scoring as he recorded his second multi-homer game as a Charger.
