Jack Shields swatted a grand slam in a six-run seventh inning that lifted the Carl Sandburg College baseball team past No. 20 Kankakee 15-14 on Sunday as the Chargers collected their first win of the season.

The Chargers (1-2) opened the weekend with a loss Saturday to South Suburban after unplayable conditions forced a pair of schedule changes. Friday's game at John A. Logan was postponed, and Saturday's contest against South Suburban was added after Sandburg's originally scheduled game at Southeastern Illinois also was washed out.

KEY MOMENTS• The Chargers grabbed a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning on the strength of a Frank Kelch RBI single, a run-scoring wild pitch and sacrifice flies from Chase Mason and Mitch Ball.• Sandburg maintained a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth before a six-run outburst by the Bulldogs. South Suburban used three singles, four walks and a Sandburg error to grab its first lead of the game.

Kelch had a pair of singles out of the designated hitter spot in the lineup, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

KEY MOMENTS• Tied at 8 in the seventh, Sandburg erupted for six runs to take the lead for good. Logan Van Heuklon delivered a single to center to put the Chargers ahead, and Shields followed with a grand slam to left that extended the lead to 13-8. Later in the frame, Jaden Coleman swiped home on a double steal to give the Chargers a 14-8 advantage.• Kelch came through with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the Chargers some insurance. They needed it as the Cavaliers scored three times in the bottom half and put the tying run on before Ian Donaldson induced a fielder's choice for the final out.

SANDBURG STANDOUT

Shields' slam accounted for all four of his RBIs on the day. He finished 2 for 6 with a pair of runs scored. The first baseman also had a single that was part of a four-run third inning. Shields was one of six Chargers with multiple hits in the contest.
