Following a season on the sidelines as an assistant, Gerardo Ruvalcaba has been named the new head men's soccer coach at Carl Sandburg College.

Ruvalcaba takes the reins of the program after spending this past season as an assistant for Victor Dantas, who stepped down after one season. With Ruvalcaba on staff this fall, the Chargers upset 10th-ranked Prairie State, which would go on to win the NJCAA Division II championship. Sandburg finished the season 5-7-1 overall and qualified for the Region IV Division II tournament before falling in the quarterfinals in a rematch with Prairie State.

"I'm very honored to take on this position, excited for the future and can't wait to get started," Ruvalcaba said. "I want to build a program where every player is part of a family that can trust, learn and help each other. If everyone is on the same page, the results will follow. I'm looking forward to helping our returning players improve and bringing in recruits who can help our team achieve the goals we're trying to reach."

"I am excited to welcome Gerardo as our next head coach," Sandburg athletic director Daniella Irle said. "This is a successful program, and Gerardo's knowledge of the game and understanding of our players and their abilities from his time as an assistant coach will help us remain competitive at the regional and national level."

A lifelong soccer player, Ruvalcaba owns GJR Barbershop & SMP in Monmouth, where he lives with his wife, Janey Mar, and three children: sons Lukaz (7) and Jurgen (6) and daughter Gianna (2).
