Hunter Caves hit the tying and game-winning free throws with 2.6 seconds left to lift the Carl Sandburg College men's basketball team to a 66-65 victory at Lincoln Land on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers (5-9) were up 64-63 in the final minute before a turnover in the backcourt led to a Loggers basket and a 65-64 lead for Lincoln Land with :05.7 to go.
On the ensuing possession, Caves was fouled on a shot attempt, putting him at the line with :02.6 left. The sophomore calmy sank both free throws, and Lincoln Land's 35-shot shot at the buzzer was too strong as Sandburg avenged a 42-point loss to the Loggers just 10 days earlier.
Caves was 4 of 4 from the line as Sandburg finished 17 of 18 from the stripe as a team. The Chargers shot 41 percent from the field while holding Lincoln Land to just 2 of 15 from 3-point range.
Roee Dinnar had a team-best 13 points off the bench for the Chargers on 5-of-6 shooting. He also tied Tyrese Grose for the team lead with seven rebounds. Grose finished with 12 points as the only other Sandburg player in double figures. Nate Hill scored nine, and Caves finished with eight points for the Chargers, who led 36-26 at halftime.
Stephan Douglas had 19 points to lead three Lincoln Land players in double figures.
