The Carl Sandburg men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Spartan Classic but came up just short of taking home the title against host Elgin on Saturday.
The Chargers beat Wright 72-64 in Friday's semifinals before falling 75-73 to the Spartans in the championship matchup.
FRIDAYSandburg 72, Wright 64 (semifinals)Sophomore Myles Estrada went 4 for 4 from 3-point range and scored a team-leading 15 to push the Chargers past the Rams.
Sandburg held on after taking a 33-20 lead into halftime as the Chargers held Wright to just 25 percent shooting in the first half.
Roe Dinnar added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench for Sandburg, and Hunter Caves had eight points and seven boards. David Hise and Connor Barnett each scored nine points in the victory.
Wright's Tim Odeyungbo led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
SATURDAYElgin 75, Sandburg 73 (championship)Barnett's first career double-double wasn't enough for the Chargers as they were unable to hang on to a 40-37 lead at the break.
Barnett finished with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and a career-best 10 rebounds in the defeat. The sophomore guard also led the Chargers with four assists.
Hise was an efficient 7 of 9 from the field to lead Sandburg in scoring with 16 points, and Caves contributed 15 points and five rebounds.
Elgin's DaRon Hall had a game-high 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting.
