After knocking off nationally ranked Prairie State in the regular season, the Carl Sandburg College men's soccer team was unable to duplicate the feat in the Region IV tournament Sunday, falling to the Pioneers 3-0 in a quarterfinal match.
Prairie State (15-3), the second seed in the tournament and 11th-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, tallied one goal in the first half and added a pair in the second half to end the Chargers' season with a 5-7-1 record.
Sandburg had beaten the Pioneers 4-3 on Oct. 1, but the Chargers were unable to get on the scoreboard in the teams' postseason rematch after recording just two shots on goal.
Prairie State struck quickly, getting an unassisted goal from Angel Arismendez in the third minute. It stayed that way until the 50th minute, when Dylan Hawley doubled the Pioneers' advantage with a goal of an assist from Stefan Mazzariol. Mazzariol gave Prairie State some insurance with an unassisted score in the 65th minute.
Prairie State advances to face top-seeded Triton in the semifinals Wednesday at Triton.
