Board Approves Funds for Energy Upgrades to Fitness Center

The Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees during its regular monthly meeting Oct. 20 approved the use of Protection, Health and Safety funds for repairs to upgrade the HVAC system and energy efficiency of the Fitness Center on the Main Campus in Galesburg.

Work will include upgrading HVAC rooftop units as well as roof repairs and the addition of a retrofit insulation system, which are expected to reduce energy loss in the Fitness Center, aerobics studio and gymnasium by as much as 40 percent. Work is expected to begin in this summer and be completed by next fall. The project is estimated to cost $274,430.

Also in the meeting, trustees adopted tentative tax year 2022 levies, which were based upon a projected tax base of $2,195,440,658 and would represent an increase of 2.5 percent over the EAV growth for tax year 2021.

The Board also moved to renew the College’s health insurance program for employees with BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois and to continue the employee dental and life insurance plans through Principal Financial Group.

The Board adopted its schedule for regular meetings for 2023. All meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. in the A. Lewis Long Conference Room (E200) on the Main Campus in Galesburg on the following dates:

• Jan. 26

• Feb. 23

• March 23

• May 2 (scheduled to accommodate the April 4 general election results and reorganization of the Board)

• May 25

• June 29

• July 27

• Aug. 24

• Sept. 28

• Oct. 19

• Nov. 20

• Dec. 21

In other business, the Board approved the following:

• Employment of Morgan Johnson as director of recruitment, effective Nov. 1.

• Employment of Elizabeth Buck as math and natural sciences support specialist, effective Nov. 1.

• Employment of Jane Breslin as library information services assistant, effective Nov. 1.

• Resignation of Kyle Gordon as public safety officer, effective Oct. 22.

• Extension of unpaid leave of absence with non-accrual of benefits for Dean Blust, effective Nov. 1-June 30.

The Board’s next scheduled meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 21 on the Main Campus in Galesburg.
