The Monmouth College women's soccer team fell at home 3-1 to Grinnell College on Wednesday. Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) scored the lone goal for the Scots (3-9, 0-4) and all four goals in the game were scored in the first half.
Grinnell (6-1-4, 4-0-1) jumped out on top just 12 minutes into the game when Jillian Paladino beat goalkeeper Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) from distance. Less than three minutes later Paladino scored again, this time pouncing on a loose ball in the goal mouth after Selquist deflected the original corner kick. The Pioneers made it 3-0 just two minutes later when an attempted clearance by the Scots hit Jane March in the face and ricocheted into the goal.
The Scots got on the board in the 30th minute. Walker took a pass from Lynn Rech (Vacaville California) and tucked her shot just inside the post, past the Pioneers keeper. The goal is the first in conference play for Walker and her ninth overall on the season. Rech leads the Scots with seven assists.
Monmouth didn't get a shot on goal in the second half and neither team scored over the final 60:47 of the game. Selquist made three saves in the first half and Bronte de Zwart (Adelaide, Australia) played the second half in goal making seven saves. Overall Grinnell finished with 24 shots, 13 on goal, while the Scots had four shots, two on goal.
The Scots have the weekend off with fall break underway on campus. Monmouth hosts Illinois College in a MWC match at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
