Chargers Alone Atop Conference Standings After Sweep of Sauk Valley

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team moved into sole possession of first place in the Arrowhead Conference after sweeping Sauk Valley 25-22, 25-18, 25-17 on Wednesday night at John Lewis Gym.

The Chargers (17-11, 5-0) now hold a half-game lead over the Skyhawks (15-12, 5-1) with three conference matches remaining for Sandburg. The teams will meet again Oct. 18 in Dixon.

Sandburg came out of the gates quickly Wednesday, using a 10-1 stretch to take a 10-3 lead in the first set. Jadyn Swan — who finished with a team-best 15 kills on a .406 hitting percentage — had three kills, two blocks and an ace during the opening run. The Chargers would later add a 5-0 run to go up 17-7 and four straight points for a 21-13 lead en route to taking the opening set.

Sandburg held a slim 13-12 lead in the second set before winning seven of the next 10 points, which included two of Gracie Rademacker's eight kills on the night.

The teams were tied at 7 in the third set before a 5-0 run put the Chargers ahead for good. Rademacker played a key role once again, starting the streak with back-to-back kills and closing it with an ace. Sandburg won the final four points to finish off the sweep, getting consecutive aces from libero Jasmin McDaniel to put away the match.

Setter Carmyn Baldwin had 31 assists and two aces in the victory, and Rademacker led the Chargers defensively with 15 digs in addition to serving a pair of aces. McDaniel picked up 11 balls from her back-row spot and had a team-best four aces.

Lillian Isenhour, playing in her second match since returning from an ankle injury sustained in Sandburg's season-opening tournament, had six of the Chargers' 11 blocks on the night.
