Galesburg Community Unit School District No. 205 Board of Education met May 9.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Call to Order/Roll Call

The Community Unit School District #205 Board of Education met in closed session prior to the regular meeting at 6:00 PM at 932 Harrison St., Galesburg, IL. The roll was read and the following Members responded: Bess-Tabb, Rodriguez, Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe (5) Absent: Cervantez, Boettcher (2) Roll Call #1

Closed Session

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to move to closed session. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Bess-Tabb, Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Rodriguez (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #2

Following closed session, it was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to move to open session. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Bess-Tabb, Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Rodriguez (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #3

Roll Call

President Scherpe called the regular meeting to order. On roll call the following Members were present: Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Rodriguez, Bess-Tabb, (5) Absent: Cervantez, Boettcher (2) Motion carried. Roll Call #4

Moment of Silence/Pledge of Allegiance

A moment of silence was observed followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Recognition of Visitors

Eliza Archer Karlin, spoke to the Board regarding a request to fly progressive pride flags in the District.

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve the consent agenda as presented. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Phelps, Rodriguez, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb, Lyon (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #5

FOCUS AREA #1: Relevant Skills that Lead to Employability

A. Galesburg High School Student Council Report

Student Council Representative, Sophie Edwards, updated the Board on recent events at Galesburg High School including one final blood drive on June 3, 2022, 1pm-6pm in the library.

B. Curriculum Report—No questions were asked.

C. Special Education Report

Dr. Michaud stated that DLM testing was completed at 100% and the District met the special education maintenance of effort.

D. Building Reports—No questions were asked.

FOCUS AREA #2: Facilities that Assist in Skill Acquisition

A. Buildings and Grounds Committee Report

Member Lyon stated that one of the major projects completed was the replacement of the entryway floor and Wicall gym remodel should be finished by the end of June. Summer projects are on schedule to start. Member Lyon also addressed that the air conditioning isn’t working, Mr. Lee Marbach stated that the District was in line to have the chiller started was previously scheduled to begin next week and unfortunately can’t be turned on this week despite the heat outside because the factory technician must start the chiller, the District can’t or the warranty is voided.

B. Consider Approval of Change Order Request for Jr.-Sr. High Additional Crawlspace Structural Repairs

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Bess-Tabb to approve as presented. Lee Marbach stated that as they got into the structure in the crawlspace some of the beams were deteriorated more than expected so this is for additional work above the original bid scope. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Rodriguez, Phelps, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb, Lyon, (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #6

FOCUS AREA #3: Responding to the Changing Needs of our Community 

A. Consider Approval of Board of Education Meeting Schedule

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve the Board meeting schedule as presented, keeping the meetings on the second Monday of every month. Members voted AYE: Scherpe, Rodriguez, Bess-Tabb, Lyon, Phelps (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #7

B. Consider Approval of Amendment and Extension of Transportation Services It was moved by Member Lyon and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve as presented. Mrs. Hamm stated that this is for a two-year extension with an increase of fifteen percent in year one and a five percent increase in year two. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Bess-Tabb, Rodriguez, Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe (5) Motion carried. Roll call #8

C. Consider Approval of Dual Credit Agreement with Carl Sandburg College It was moved by Member Bess-Tabb and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve as presented. Dr. Asplund stated that this is a yearly agreement to apply dual credit and high school credit for those students who take advantage of dual credit classes. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Rodriguez, Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #9

D. Consider Approval of Trip Requests

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve as presented. Mr. Matthews stated that these are the last few trip requests for football, cheerleading and wrestling. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb, Rodriguez (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #10

E. Consider Approval of Weight Room Equipment Disposal

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve as presented. Mr. Matthews stated that the four items slated for disposal are either broken or not in use. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb, Rodriguez (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #11

PERSONNEL

A. Consider Approval of Personnel Agenda

It was moved by Member Phelps and seconded by Member Rodriguez to approve as presented. On roll call the following Members voted AYE: Lyon, Phelps, Scherpe, Bess-Tabb, Rodriguez (5) Motion carried. Roll Call #12

B. Grievance Update

Dr. Asplund stated that there are no current grievances.

Comments by Board of Education

Comments were made by Member Lyon.

Future Agenda Items

Member Phelps would like insurance brought forward and Member Lyon would like a solar report for generating power on the Lincoln panels.

Future Meeting Dates

The next regular meeting is Monday, June 13, 2022 at 7PM.
