Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Woodhull) is trying to pass a measure that designates a portion of Interstate 57 in the City of Benton as the "38th Parallel Korean Veteran Highway."
Swanson spoke on the House floor in favor of House Joint Resolution 88 (H.J.R. 88) during an April 8 debate, describing it as a "unique resolution."
"House Joint Resolution 88 recognizes the heroes that fought and served in Korea by naming a part of Interstate 57 within the limits of Benton, Ill. as a 38th Parallel Korean Veteran Highway," Swanson stated, "The 38th parallel is very significant to the warriors of Korea, as that is where the DMZ, the Demilitarized Zone, was established."
Franklin County, according to Swanson, shares a latitude line with the 38th parallel and he wants to place a sign honoring Korean War veterans.
"The Korean War played an important part in American history and the veterans of the Korean War have earned our respect and admiration," Swanson stated, "I ask you to join me in extending that recognition and appreciation and pass this joint resolution establishing Interstate 57 at the 38th parallel as the Korean Veteran Highway."
Swanson introduced H.J.R. 88 in the House last month, where it passed unanimously.
The resolution has been submitted to the Senate Assignments Committee and presented to the Senate.
