The Monmouth College men's lacrosse team went on the road Wednesday for a make-up game at Illinois Tech and lost 17-9. The Scots are now 4-3 on the season as they prepare to start conference play at home on April 9.
The Scarlet Hawks scored the first four goals of the game and led 4-0 with 6:02 to play in the opening quarter. Jeff Knapp (Nolensville, Tennessee) got the Scots on the board with 1:07 to play in the first quarter. Both teams scored in the final 40 seconds of the quarter with Kain Donohoo (St. Charles, Illinois) scoring unassisted with 13 seconds left.
Illinois Tech pushed the lead to 7-2 before Donohoo scored again. Michael Casey (Chicago, Illinois) scored with two seconds left in the half to cut the Monmouth deficit to 8-4 at the break.
The score was 11-4 when Knapp scored in the third quarter and IT scored the next three for a 14-5 lead. Donohoo scored his third of the game to end the third quarter.
The Scots went down 17-6 before scoring the final three goals of the game. Knapp had the first of those with 3:28 to play and Donohoo scored twice in a 10-second span to cut the lead to 17-9.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Donohoo scored five goals and now ranks fourth in Monmouth history in career points…He is also tied for ninth in the season goals list…Knapp scored three goals and ranks sixth on the single-season goals list with 23…Jack Koenn (Dexter, Michigan) is the ninth player in school history to play in 40 games…Knapp is now 10th in games played with 39, passing Nick Thomas…Teagan Simons (Littleton, Colorado) made eight saves and has 106 on the season, a career high…He is the fourth Monmouth goalie to post at least 100 saves in a season…This was the first ever men's lacrosse meeting between Monmouth and Illinois Tech…The Scots will host North Central (MN) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 in the Midwest Conference opener.
