ROWVA Community Unit School District 208 Board of Education met Feb. 22.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The ROWVA Board of Education met in their regular meeting in the High School LMC. The meeting was called to order by Mr. Haynes at 7:00 pm.

The following members answered roll call at 7:00 pm:

Mr. Johnson (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. Lake (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. West (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Present ☒ Not Present ☐).

Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion to approve the Consent Agenda for the minutes of January 18, 2022 and February 15, 2022, the Treasurer’s Report, and the payment of all bills in Education, Operations and Maintenance, Transportation, IMRF, Working Cash, Fire/Safety and Activity Funds as listed on the official copy. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried.

People present were Board members, administrators, teachers and members of the public.

Mrs. Danner presented the elementary principal’s report. She reviewed: School year goals, professional development, educational spotlight, and upcoming events/activities.

Mr. Seaney presented the jr./sr. high school principal’s report. He reviewed: School year goals, student spotlight, education spotlight, and upcoming events/activities.

Mr. Sornberger presented the superintendent’s report. All items were Agenda items.

Mrs. Danner and Mr. Seaney presented their remote learning plans and Mr. Sornberger recommended that they be approved as presented. Note: On Page 2 of the JH/HS plan (Teacher Expectations), bullet #1 was struck. Mr. West moved and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that we go back to 1:30 p.m. Monday dismissals, for teacher preparation, throughout the remainder of the school year. No action was taken on this item.

The athletic committee recommended cooping with Williamsfield for JH Boys Basketball, JH Girls Basketball and JH Cheerleading. Mr. Kuelper moved and Mr. West seconded the motion. Motion carried.

The athletic committee recommended adding HS Wrestling and cooping with Williamsfield for it. Mr. Lake moved and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. West seconded appointing John Kuelper as the new Board Secretary. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried.

Mr. Johnson moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion to move into closed session to discuss personnel, matters pertaining to an individual student and legal council complaint. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried.

Mr. Lake moved and Mr. Kuelper seconded the motion to return to open session to discuss personnel, matters pertaining to an individual student and legal council complaint. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried at 8:18 p.m.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that Shelley Ponce’s (bus driver) retirement be accepted at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Mr. Johnson moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that the immediate resignation of Traci Johnson (teacher) be accepted effective immediately. Mr. West moved and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended hiring Mike Keener as the day shift High School custodian. Mr. Kuelper moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended hiring Terri Brooks as the day shift Elementary/JH School custodian. Mr. Johnson moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended hiring Shyanne Hendrickson as a Bus Driver. Mr. West moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended hiring Gaye Henson as a cook. Mr. Kuelper moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger requested approval to post job openings for a second shift High School custodian, a bus driver, a cook/dishwasher and a HS wrestling coach. Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. West seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Transportation committee report.

Mr. Gullstrand discussed competitive cheer, gym speakers and the coaching stipend schedule. Mr. West discussed possibly building a storage shed.

Mr. Kuelper moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion to adjourn at 8:41 pm. Motion carried.
