The Monmouth College women's basketball team fell 62-49 on Senior Day to Ripon on Saturday. The contest featured the top-two teams in the Midwest Conference standings with the Red Hawks (12-9, 11-1) coming out on top over the Scots (12-7, 9-4). Monmouth maintains a one-game lead over Knox for second place.
The Scots started slow on Saturday with just five points in the first quarter. Ripon sprinted out to a 9-0 lead before Kaitlyn Osmulski (Peoria, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer. Ripon scored nine straight again and Jordan Kintigh (Goshen, Indiana) scored before the visitors took a 21-5 lead.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter and Ripon pushed the lead to 22. Monmouth finished the half on a 5-0 run with a basket from Kintigh, two free throws from Osmulski and a 3-pointer by Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois).
Ripon started the second half with a 35-20 lead but Monmouth got a 3-pointer from Zoie Wall (Peoria, Illinois) . A bucket from Kintigh cut the lead to 10 and after Ripon missed three free throws, the Scots got the deficit down to eight. However that was as close as they got with Ripon going on a 6-0 run to close the quarter.
The Red Hawks pushed the lead back to 17 early in the fourth, peaking at 19. The Scots cut it back down to 13 on occasion, but got no closer, falling 62-49.
Osmulski led the Scots with 13 points while Kintigh had 10 and Wall had nine. Kintigh had eight rebounds while Mitchell led the team with three assists. The Scots host Cornell at 7:30 p.m Tuesday. The Rams had both games against Lawrence postponed this weekend and sit in fourth-place in the MWC at 6-5.
