ROWVA Community Unit School District 208 Board of Education met Nov. 15.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The ROWVA Board of Education met in their regular meeting in the High School LMC. The meeting was called to order by Mr. Haynes at 7:00 p.m.

The following members answered roll call at 7:00 p.m.:

Mr. Johnson (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. Kalb (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. Lake (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), Mr. West (Present ☒ Not Present ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Present ☒ Not Present ☐).

Mr. Kuelper moved and Mr. Kalb seconded the motion to approve the Consent Agenda for the minutes of October 18, 2021, the Treasurer’s Report, and the payment of all bills in Education, Operations and Maintenance, Transportation, IMRF, Working Cash, Fire/Safety and Activity Funds as listed on the official copy. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kalb (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried.

People present were Board members, administrators, and members of the public, support staff and certified staff. Fifteen members of the audience requested to address the board. The following members of the public, staff, or students spoke on topics concerning cheer camp song choice, book choice for freshman English class, the continued use of masks in school, district communication and transparency, and support of administration and staff: Peggy Johnston, Knud Ullerup, Bob Goss, Amber Fleming, Tim Flemming, Jay Reeke, Christi Main, Pete Main, Katie Johnston, Corey Finneran, Christinel Cain, Heather Godsil, Jared Murdock, Carla Gibbons, Clara Asplund.

Mrs. Danner presented the elementary principal’s report. She reviewed: School year goals, educational spotlight, Instructional Coach update, and upcoming events/activities.

Mr. Seaney presented the jr./sr. high school principal’s report. He reviewed: School year goals, enrollment numbers, student spotlight, education spotlight, and upcoming events/activities.

Future Ready Report: Mr. Sornberger discussed a number of building projects which are presently being reviewed and designed with Klingner Architects.

Mr. Sornberger presented the superintendent’s report. All items were Agenda items.

Mr. Sornberger, Mr. Seaney and Mrs. Danner discussed the Return to School Plan. Mr. Lake made the motion to extend the Return to School plan through March 11th, 2022, seconded by Mr. West. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger shared the proposed tax levy and requested approval to post it in the unit office until the December Board meeting. Mr. Kalb moved and Mr. Kuelper seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that a Truth in Taxation hearing be held at 6:50 pm on Monday, December 13, 2021. Mr. Kuelper moved and Mr. Kalb seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that the bid of $2,105 for the Nissan Versa (Bill Ostrander) be accepted, the bid of $1,010 for the Ford Minivan (Alex Borkgren) be accepted, and the bid of $250 for the Ford Truck (Pete DeRidder) be accepted. Mr. Lake moved and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Kuelper moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion to move into closed session to discuss personnel and matters pertaining to individual students. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kalb (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried at 8:15 p.m.

Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. West seconded the motion to return to open session to discuss personnel and matters pertaining to individual students. Polled vote: Mr. Johnson (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kalb (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Kuelper (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. Lake (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mrs. Shepherd (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), Mr. West (Aye ☒ Nay ☐), and Mr. Haynes (Aye ☒ Nay ☐). Motion carried at 10:32 p.m.

Mr. Sornberger recommended accepting the resignation from Amy Nees (Jr/Sr High School Secretary). Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger requested that his resignation as Bass Fishing Sponsor be accepted. Mr. Kalb moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that Kelly Gridley be hired as an Elementary / Jr High Custodian. Mr. West moved and Mr. Kuelper seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger recommended that Michelle Westerdale be hired as the JV Girls Basketball Coach. Mrs. Shepherd moved and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Mr. Sornberger requested approval to post openings for a Jr/Sr High School Secretary and a Bass Fishing Sponsor. Mr. West moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Finance Committee met to discuss the tax levy.

Mr. Kuelper moved and Mrs. Shepherd seconded the motion to adjourn at 10:35 p.m. Motion carried.
