Scots Soccer Split DH at Ripon Saturday

Monmouth College Athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 9

The Monmouth College soccer teams both played Midwest Conference games at Ripon on Saturday with the women winning 6-0 and the men falling 3-0. The women's game featured six different Monmouth goal scorers and was the first game of the day.

The contest was scoreless after 30 minutes before the Scots got the breakthrough. Kim Lopez (Kenosha, Wisconsin) took a pass from Sam Koppers (Tinley Park, Illinois) and beat the Red Hawks goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. The game remained 1-0 as Monmouth outshot Ripon 21-1 in the first half.

"I'm real proud of the effort and energy everyone brought today," said coach Lucas Henderson. "It was a complete 90-minute performance today and something we can build on."

Defender Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) doubled the Scots lead three minutes into the second half. She scored on a corner kick and Monmouth broke the game open right on the hour mark with two goals in five minutes. Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) had the first goal while Kaylee Doebert (Mount Horeb, Wisconsin) scored on a corner kick delivered by Sarah Poirier (Lombard, Illinois).

The final two goals were also five minutes apart as Koppers scored in the 73rd minute and Kelsey Holtgrave (Hillsboro, Illinois) scored in the 78th. Jaedyn Mitchell (Rockford, Illinois) and Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) added assists in the win.

Freshmen keepers Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) and Anna Caster (Greenfield, Indiana) split the game but neither had to make a save. Monmouth outshot Ripon 39-3 with 15 shots on goal. The Scots are next in action on Tuesday at Grinnell with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.

The men's game followed and was scoreless through the first 25 minutes. Ripon broke through in the 26th minute with the first goal of the game despite Monmouth taking eight more shots than the hosts in the first half.

Ripon got two goals from Eli Dietzel in the second half to put the game away. He scored in the 68th and 75th minutes as the Red Hawks won 3-0.

For the game Monmouth outshot Ripon 22-13 and shots on goal were even at eight. The Scots had two more corner kicks for the contest.

Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) made two saves and allowed one goal in the first half. Christopher Zavala (New Lenox, Illinois) made three saves and allowed two goals in the second half. The Scots travel to Grinnell on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
