Monmouth College Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 25

The Monmouth College men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought conference opener on Saturday with a 2-1 home loss to Cornell College. Both teams scored on penalty kicks before the Rams took the lead on an own goal with less than 13 minutes to play. The loss drops the Scots to 0-5-2 on the season and 0-1 in MWC play.

Cornell had the first chance to score when the Scots were whistled for a penalty kick just 12:50 into the game. But Monmouth goalkeeper Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) dove to his right and saved the kick from Cian McNamara to keep the game scoreless.

The Rams kept the pressure on and were awarded another penalty kick at 26:24 when Garibay was carded for a tackled on George Archer. This time Zach Miller stepped up and blasted the kick into the net for a 1-0 Cornell lead.

The game was still 1-0 into the second half when Monmouth's Ivan Sanchez (Hoffman Estates, Illinois) was brought down in the box. With just 6:30 gone by in the half, Nico Esparon (Saint-Denis, France) took the kick for the Scots and beat Will Bickel to even the game 1-1.

Both teams pushed for the go-ahead goal and it took more than 30 minutes before the score changed. Archer sent a Cornell corner kick into the box and the ball deflected off a Monmouth player and into the net for an own goal with 12:59 to play.

The Scots had a couple late chances with the ball in the box but couldn't find another equalizer. Appeals for a late hand ball in the box were waved away as the final horn sounded and Cornell won 2-1.
