The decision by Democrats in the Illinois Legislature to redraw the state’s supreme court map was terribly misguided. The new boundaries were jammed through and signed by Governor Pritzker with very little time for public comment.
Despite the proposal’s swift approval by the governor, the new maps were drawn in such an egregiously partisan manner that members of the Illinois Supreme Court have halted implementation of the new appellate districts. A major cause for concern is the state legislature’s use of the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data when drawing the maps, rather than the Census’ official decennial report, which is much more accurate.
Mind you, this is the first change in the state’s supreme court boundaries in over 50 years. A decision this impactful should not have been rushed and should have instead been carefully considered by a wide variety of stakeholders. This brazenly partisan maneuver cannot be allowed to stand. I encourage Illinoisans to speak out.
