Knoxville Community Unit School District #202 Board of Education met April 19.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Community Unit School District #202, Knox County, met in a regular meeting duly called and held at 6:00 p.m. at 809 East Main Street, Knoxville, Illinois, which is within the boundaries of said District. The President called the meeting to order and directed that the roll be called. Upon roll being called, the following members were found to be present:

Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

And the following absent:

4. Also present were: Joe F. Burgess Jr., Jenn Walter, Geoff Schoonover, Matt Maaske, Pat Hise, Tara Bahnks, Darcy Young, Ryan Scalf, Keri Pala, Chuck Hillery.

5. It was moved by Member Stearns and seconded by Member Johnson to approve the consent agenda.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

6. Public Forum

6.1 Public Comments - None

6.2 Good Things Happening for Kids - A slideshow was emailed to the Board.

Mr. Callahan thanked the Administrators for everything they have done this year. Mrs. Bahnks shared Mable Woolsey will be doing state testing next month (May). They are going to hold the mini blitz this year at the Sports Complex on May 7. All of Mable Woolsey will be going to the AMC theater in Galesburg May 4th, the PTO had rented all of the theater so the students and staff could see a movie. Mr. Maaske shared that the Industrial Tech students “borrowed” money from him to start their own stool business and as of today they had paid it all back. KJHS will have state testing for two days in May. Mr. Bahnks shared the catering class is doing a great job. They will have a food competition complete with judging in the next few weeks. The high school held the play with limited capacity. The Industrial Tech students are looking for reclaimed wood for some projects.

6.3 Superintendent’s Report - Mr. Burgess spoke regarding the ACES committee and strategic plan. He told the board it was vital to have community input.

Mr. Burgess shared information on the new SOPPA law. This law is to protect the rights of students from 3rd parties using their information.

The board was informed the ROE would be presenting the training for new board members, with more information to come.

Mr. Burgess updated the board on PLC’s. Time is needed for the staff to meet. The ROE is going to take over remote learning, so that will take some pressure off the teachers. It was suggested the new board discuss whether to do early dismissals or late starts, once a week or once a month. Mr. Burgess suggested every other Wednesday, with late starts and will send the information to the board.

6.4 Board Committee Reports -

6.4.1 Building Committee - MSI will be running the water and sewer lines for the new Pressbox. Mrs. McCracken mentioned needing new lighting out front of the junior high and possibly a lit name sign over the front door.

6.4.2 Curriculum Committee - Mr. Callahan and Mrs. Myers worked on the strategic plan. Mr. Callahan informed the board not all districts have a formal plan. The information came from the state report card and the ACES committee.

6.4.3 Finance Committee - No report. Mr. Stearns questioned about the negative funds on the funds report.

6.4.4 Transportation Committee - The board was informed that Chuck found the district a backup bus. Bus #16 was stranded and had to be towed, the computer was bad.

It was going to cost $6000 to fix. Mr. Hillery reported this bus to be in great shape and it would cost $8500.

8. New Business

8.1 It was moved by Member Myers and seconded by Member Stearns for Approval of Second Reading of PRESS policy update 6:190; 7:300 with changes. The academic waiver does not extend past the 1st semester of 2021-2022.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.2 It was moved by Member McCracken and seconded by Member Johnson for Approval to Publish bids for Milk and Bread for 2021-2022 school year.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.3 It was moved by Member Myers and seconded by Member Ericson for Approval of the Waiver of Non Resident Tuition fees for children of District Teachers for the 2021-2022 school year.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: Mr. Lenz

8.4 It was moved by Member Stearns and seconded by Member Johnson for Approval of the Shelter and Transportation Agreement between the Knox County Nursing Home and Knoxville District #202.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.5 It was moved by Member Ericson and seconded by Member Myers for Approval to Renew IHSA membership for the 2021-2022 school year.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.6 It was moved by Member Johnson and seconded by Member Ericson for Approval to Publish the Fuel bids for the 2022 fiscal year.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.7 It was moved by Member McCracken and seconded by Member Myers for Approval of Employment for the IT Director.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

8.8 It was moved by Member Johnson and seconded by Member Myers for Approval of Employment of the Mable Woolsey Principal.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, and Mr. Callahan

NAY: Mr. Stearns

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

9. Correspondence / Other business

Mr. Callahan read memorial thank you cards. Mrs. Myers thanked the board for sending out emails to staff. She suggested purchasing donuts for all 3 buildings for Teacher Appreciation week. Mr. Ericson requested to hand his son his diploma next year. Mr. Maaske told the board there would be an 8th grade promotion on May 25th. Mr. Bahnks updated the board on graduation. It will be outside at the sports complex at 3 p.m. on May 23rd. There will be a senior parade again this year, following the same route as last year. It will be May 15th at 3 p.m. Mr. Bahnks also sent a video and link to all board members for the honors banquet.

10. It was moved by Member Ericson and seconded by Member Johnson to go into Closed Session at 7:10 p.m.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lenz, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

It was moved by Member Johnson and seconded by Member Ericson to go back into Open Session at 8:55 p.m.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Callahan

NAY: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

11. It was moved by member Johnson and seconded by Member Ericson for Approval of Administrator Salaries for the 2021-2022 school year.

AYE: Mr. Ericson, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. McCracken, Mrs. Myers and Mr. Callahan

NAY: Mr. Lenz, Mr. Stearns

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.

12. Adjournment

There being no further business to come before the Board, it was moved by Member Ericson and seconded by Member Johnson that the meeting be adjourned. The President put the question to the Board and the motion unanimously carried and the meeting so adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
