Illinois state lawmakers have gotten back to work, but operations still have not returned to normal, and the Capitol building remains closed to the public.
With the Capitol building still closed, Illinois State Sen. Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) urged the public to keep a close eye on lawmakers and stay up-to-date on legislation.
"Because the Capitol remains closed to the public, I fear my constituents may not be aware of the type of legislation that is moving forward," Tracy wrote in a May 13 Facebook post. "Senate Republicans continue to push for improved transparency to restore what Illinois’ favorite son Abraham Lincoln had in mind when he described a government 'of the people, by the people, for the people.'"
This year, Senate Republicans filed numerous reform measures, but the Democratic-led General Assembly has shut down those efforts.
As of the April Senate Bill deadline, approximately 88% of committee action focused on Democrat's initiatives, with 427 Democratic-backed bills moving forward to votes at the Senate Committee level and only 56 measures sponsored by Republicans advancing to a vote.
More than 7,200 legislative proposals have been filed to amend existing laws or create new laws to date.
