Galesburg has awarded a $25,000 operational grant to the Discovery Depot children's museum.

The grant is intended to help cover operating costs and losses caused by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, WQAD 8 reported in late January.

The museum had to close down twice in 2020 for pandemic-related reasons, which hurt the operation financially.

"Unlike retail or restaurants, we do not have the ability to deliver, or curbside sell our product, which is engaging children and families in learning," Discovery Depot Executive Director Denise Bradburn told WQAD News.

In August, the museum also served as a remote-learning location for kindergarten through fifth-grade students to attend school remotely while their parents were at work.

"We're still inspiring learning we're just helping in a different way," Bradburn said.

Galesburg awarded grants in amounts between $5,000 and $25,000 to 35 businesses or organizations across the city, including Discovery Depot.
