The Galesburg Police Department recently announced on Facebook that individuals with active warrants for select minor crimes can take advantage of a limited time opportunity to have their warrants quashed and have their court dates rescheduled, according to KWQC News.

The decision to extend this courtesty was announced by State Attorney Jeremy Karlin and Circuit Clerk Kelly Cheesman. On Dec. 21, 22 and 23, individuals with active warrants for petty offenses, traffic offenses or nonviolent misdemeanors were given the opportunity to take advantage of a "warrant amnesty" to resolve their active warrants in person at the Knox County Courthouse and have their court dates rescheduled

Those with failure-to-appear warrants were included in the decision and the county sheriff’s office and Galesburg police both agreed not to arrest individuals with failure-to-appear warrants showing up to take advantage of the warrant amnesty.

The decision to have the warrant amnesty was in response to the rising number of failure-to-appear warrants as a result of complications related to the current COVID-19 health crisis.

“The COVID pandemic has resulted in an increase in failure-to-appear warrants,” Cheesman said on a press release announcing the event. “People have had greater difficulty appearing on their scheduled court dates due to COVID exposures and other complications.”

The Galesburg Police Department also recently reminded citizens that according to the City's winter parking guidelines, parking on city streets is prohibited any time snow accumulation reaches two inches and will remain in effect on all city streets until the street has been completely plowed. Cars parked on city streets at that time will be subject to ticketing and towing.

The Central Business District (except for the NW corner of the public square) is excluded in this parking prohibition

The complete snow removal policy can be found on the Streets Page of the City website.
