The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall (OSFM) announced on Nov. 16 it will award $3.3 million in grant funding to qualifying fire department districts and nonprofit ambulance services providers for the purchase of needed equipment.

Applications should be submitted no later than Jan. 29, 2021.

A report in the Mt. Pulaski Times-Herald said the Small Equipment Grant Program will provide grants of up to $26,000 for the purchase of small firefighting and ambulance equipment. The OFSM awarded $3.5 million to 154 departments across the state of Illinois last June.

In addition to personal protective equipment (PPE’s) applicants may also apply for protective gear such as masks, gowns and gloves.

The report said most Illinois fire departments, fire protection districts and township firefighting units are eligible to apply as well as stand-alone (not for profit) ambulance services.

To qualify fire departments and districts must have participated for at least two years in a National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).
