City of Galesburg Tree Commission met Sept. 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Roll Call: Present: Members: Pat Trant, Ann Pennington, Millie Allen, Debbie Steinberg, Jane Easterly, Director of Parks & Recreation-Tony Oligney-Estill

Absent:

Minutes of July 13, 2020 where approved. The meeting in August was cancelled.

Arborist Report:

• There was no Arborist report. City Arborist Ryan Creek resigned from his position in late July.

Old Business:

• Debbie completed the tree portion of the Standish Park Arboretum map. Debbie is now working on adding some language from the current map that talks about the Arboretum.

• The Arbor Day tree planting scheduled for August 22nd was cancelled. Superintendent of Parks, Don Miles, went out to the spots identified for the tree planting to check to make sure a tree could be planted at those locations. During his check, he found that there were still roots from the previous trees in those locations.

New Business:

• The library held a tree/plant swap in August as part of a celebration on August 22nd. The library staff gave away 11 sapling trees. There were many plants that were dropped of for the swap. The library staff ended up with quite a bit of extra plants left over.

• Michael “Roy” Flaig was hired to be the new City Arborist. If all goes well, Roy will begin on October 5, 2020. Roy joins us from working at a tree service in New Orleans, Louisiana.

• There was discussion about doing a tree planting this fall. Tony said Roy will be working on removing trees when he starts so the earliest the City will plant new trees will be in the spring of 2021. Roy will be at the October Tree Commission Meeting so the Commissioners can meet him and share their thoughts on the urban forestry of Galesburg.

Citizen Comments:

• None

Meeting adjourned at 4:34 P.M.
