Simmons Street could soon return to its heyday if the City of Galesburg chooses to restore the road to its original look.
The reconstruction project is estimated at $3.17 million to remove the pavement and install brick on Simmons Street between Cherry and Seminary streets. Should the city be awarded grant funding through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, Galesburg would have to pick up the tab for $1.17 million, which is less than half of the project's total cost.
If funding is approved for the project, it likely wouldn't go out to bid until late 2022 or early 2023. The project would likely span over three phases to minimize traffic interruptions.
Although the original bricks on Simmons Street are still under the pavement, City Public Works Director Wayne Carl told The Register-Mail they'd need to be removed because there's no easy way to keep them. He also said they weren't made to withhold the heavy load vehicles in today's era.
