An officer with the Galesburg Police Department was awarded the 2019 Crime Stoppers Officer of the Year Award.

According to the city, the department congratulated 15-year veteran officer Maggie Semington for being chosen for the award. Semington was nominated after she responded to a call on an Interstate 74 bridge of a suicidal subject. The subject was sitting on the ledge and would not come off, continuing to move closer to the edge. Semington then wrapped her arms around the subject and pulled the subject off the ledge, risking her own safety in doing so.

"Officer Semington is a hard working and committed officer, dedicated to serving the Galesburg community," Chief Russ Idle said.

The incident report stated Semington's heroic acts saved the person's life and prevented injury to the drivers who were on the highway below the bridge.
