Glenwood High School recently canceled all summer youth sports camps because it felt it could no longer conduct meaningful camps due to stricter COVID-19 requirements.
The tighter restrictions were instituted by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in an attempt to deter the spread of COVID-19.
School board member Patrick Phipps expressed his indignation about the cancellations. "This is so sad for our local student athletes," Phipps said in a Facebook post on July 9. "When will the ISBE and IDPH learn that their decisions are inflicting significant harm and suffering on our young people?"
That same day, Phipps called on members of the community to join the Million Unmasked March, a rally at the Illinois Capitol for people to protest directives requiring students to wear personal protective equipment, specifically masks, and future requirements of COVID-19 vaccinations in order to attend school.
"For those of you sick and tired of the asinine and harmful “suggestions” for returning to school mandated in Illinois, come out to the Capitol on the 25th and let the lawmakers know," Phipps said on Facebook. "Our kids’ futures are literally at stake."
