City of Galesburg Tree Commission met Jan. 13.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Meeting was called to order by Tony Oligney-Estill at 4:00 P.M.

Roll Call: Present: Members: Pat Trant, Jane Easterly, Debbie Steinberg, City Arborist-Ryan Creek and Director of Parks & Recreation-Tony Oligney-Estill

Absent: Ann Pennington, Millie Allen

Minutes of December 9, 2019 where approved. Arborist Report:

• The Arborist report was approved.

Old Business:

• The Tree Commission has decided on planting two trees at the library his year for the Arbor Day Celebration in April. The exact location where the two trees will be planted has not been identified yet.

• Tony will contact Eileen Castro at the Library to invite her to the next Tree Commission meeting in February and also see how the Tree Commission might be able to help her with the Big Read and possibly the Earth Day/Arbor Day celebrations.

• Tony has not met with the Forestry staff yet but will in the next month. The list of trees that need to be removed has decreased from around 55 trees to around 20 trees.

• One goal the Commissioners agree with is to increase education to the residents on the need and benefits of trees this year. Another suggestion was to require residents with tree requests to make their request through the Commission instead of contacting Ryan directly. This would hopefully reduce the amount of times Ryan gets pulled away from a project he is working on. No decision was made on this idea.

New Business:

• Commissioners were asked to think of ways to get educational information about the benefits of trees out to the community.

• Tony will look for an editable version of the Standish Park Arboretum map. If Tony can find one, he will send it to Debbie so she can update it. Citizen Comments:

• None

Meeting adjourned at 4:50 P.M.
