Meeting909

City of Galesburg Tree Commission met Oct. 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Meeting was called to order by Tony Oligney-Estill at 4:00 P.M.

Roll Call: Present: Members: Millie Allen, Pat Trant, Jane Easterly, Debbie Steinberg, City Arborist-Ryan Creek and Director of Parks & Recreation, Tony Oligney-Estill Absent: Ann Pennington

Minutes of September 9, 2019 where approved.

Arborist Report:

• The Arborist report was approved.

• A question was asked about the Citizen Calls and PSR reporting. Most of the communication from citizens is by phone or email. The City has received approximately 20 PSR reports.

Old Business:

• Trees4Galesburg assisted the Forestry Division by planting 10 trees along the multi-use path just northwest of the Pavilion out at Lake Storey. There was a total of 10 volunteers with the majority of the volunteers coming from the Sunrise Rotary Club. Special thank you was given to Tom Simkins who went and purchased supplies to tie down the trees as it was very windy on the day of the planting. A thank you was also sent to Ryan Creek who dug all the holes for the trees. Without the holes pre-dug, all 10 trees would not have been able to be planted. Volunteers were on site for about two hours.

• Jane suggested two locations to have new terrace trees planted around the library near where trees were removed. Ryan will look and try to plant those trees this fall.

• Tony plans to meet with Don Miles and Ryan to formulate a plan to deal with the list of trees and stumps that need to be removed throughout the City. There will be a plan prior to spring 2020. This plan may include hiring a contractor.

• To help address the need to manage the City trees, a crew from the Parks Division has been assisting the Forestry Division for the past couple of months. Once the mowing season is over, an additional staff person will be reassigned from the Parks Division to the Forestry Division throughout the winter.

New Business:

• None.

Citizen Comments:

• David Wilson addressed the Commission with a activity he has been working on. Using a formula, David was able to calculate the age of trees in his neighborhood with the oldest tree being a Black Maple at 245 years of age. David suggested the City develop a program where people can calculate and share the age of trees in their neighborhoods as a way for residents to connect with each other and share something in common. Tony said he would look into developing such a program.

Meeting adjourned at 4:31 P.M.
