City of Galesburg Tree Commission met Sept. 9.
Here is the minutes provided by the commission:
Meeting was called to order by Tony Oligney-Estill at 4:02 P.M.
Roll Call: Present: Members: Millie Allen, Pat Trant, Jane Easterly, City Arborist-Ryan Creek and Director of Parks & Recreation, Tony Oligney-Estill
Absent: Ann Pennington, Debbie Steinberg
Minutes of April 8, 2019 where approved.
Arborist Report:
• The Arborist report was approved.
• Tony mentioned the amount of work in the Arborist Report significantly reduces from August to September as the seasonal staff usually leave in mid-August to go back to school.
Old Business:
• None
New Business:
• New Commissioners Jane Easterly and Debbie Steinberg were introduced.
• New commissioner was informed of the tree inventory process and what the tree counts are currently.
• Tony commented that the process to qualify for Tree City USA has changed this year. Further information will be emailed to Tony later in the year.
• Trees 4 Galesburg will be hosting a fall tree planting in conjunction with the City Arborist. Ten trees will be planted west of the Pavilion on the multi-use path on October 5th starting at 10am. Volunteers are being recruited for this event. Volunteers will need to bring shovels. Trees and mulch will already be on site provided by the City. The City will also take care of JULIEing the sites and marking where exact sites where the trees should be planted. The fire department is allowing the volunteers to use the fire hydrant for water.
• Tony talked about need to mow more property and take care of more trees with less staff. Because of this, Tony is looking at possibly changing the staffing responsibilities within the Parks Division to move another staff person from mowing to forestry.
• Once Ryan completes his report on how many trees need to be taken down along with how many stumps need to be removed, depending on what the report says, Tony may possibly hiring a contractor to either take down trees or take out stumps to help forestry catch up.
