United Community School District Board met May 6.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

CALL TO ORDER

The regular meeting of the United Board of Education was called to order at 7:00 p.m., May 6, 2019. Roll was called and answered by: Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Joel Johnson, Debbie King, Craig Allaman and Hank Shimmin. Also in attendance: Sheila Pressley, Makenzie Rutledge, Maggie Wallace, Chris Schwarz, Amy Schmitz, Pat Coate, Randy McElwee, Madeline Wood, Bailey Shimmin, DJ Dutton, Alex King, Melissa Poole and Aaron Leary

AGENDA

Kristin Dutton made a motion to approve the agenda with a second by Joel Johnson Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Joel Johnson, Debbie King and Hank Shimmin. Nay – none.

SHOWING SUCCESSES

Ms. Madeline Wood made presentation showcasing sever of her band students with performances by Bailey Shimmin, DJ Dutton, Alex King and Melissa Poole. The board celebrated the State Championship of the Solo and Ensemble teams from this winter.

BOARD MEMBER

A resolution to appoint Aaron Leary as board member completing the remaining 2 year term of Andy Davis was made by Debbie King with a second by Hank Shimmin. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Joel Johnson, Debbie King and Hank Shimmin. Nay – none.

BUDGET

A motion was made by Aaron Leary with a second by Debbie King to approve the tentative amended budget for FY 2019. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Joel Johnson, Debbie King, Hank Shimmin and Aaron Leary Nay – none.

VAN

Hank Shimmina made a motion to purchase a van through Bruce Foote Motors for $19,995. Joel Johnson seconded the motion.. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Hank Shimmin, Aaron Leary and Joel Johnson Nay – none.

WRESTLING

Hank Shimmin made a motion to approve the application for piloting Jr-Sr High Wrestling at United. Craig Allaman seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Hank Shimmin, Aaron Leary and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

BID

Debbie King made a motion to approve the bid from Kemper Construction, Canton for $92,530 for concrete replacement at the UHS bus ramp. Aaron Leary seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Hank Shimmin, Aaron Leary and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

JOB DESCRIPTION

A motion to approve the job description for Student Outreach Worker was made by Hank Shimmin with a second by Kristin Dutton. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

SCHOOL IMPROV

Hank Shimmins made a motion to approve the UJHS School Improvement Grant Plan. Joel Johnson seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Hank Shimmin, Aaron Leary and Joel Johnson. Nay – none. Makenzie Rutledge spoke regarding her experience as a board-student representative.

CONSENT AGENDA

A motion to approve the consent agenda as presented was made by Debbie King with a second by Kristin Dutton. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none

CLOSED SESSION

At 7:03, Hank Shimmin a made a motion to enter into closed session, with intent to return to open, for the purpose of appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the District or legal counsel for the District, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee or against legal counsel for the District to determine its validity. The selection of a person to fill a public office, including a vacancy in public office, when the District is given power to appoint under law, or the discipline, performance or removal of the occupant of a public office, when the District is given power to remove the occupant under law. Debbie King seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

EMPLOYMENT

Debbie King made a motion to increase wages for non-certified staff as presented. Hank Shimmin seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

A motion to approve Tammy Walters as District Transportation Director was made by Aaron Leary with a second by Hank Shimmin. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

Aaron Leary made a motion to approve 5 additional days to Vanessa Witherell and Patricia Bertelsen’s contract 2018-2019 school year. Hank Shimmin seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

A motion to employ Cora Neal as summer maintenance help with a start date of May 28, 2019 was made by Debbie King with a second by Joel Johnson. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

A motion to employ Jeff Hannam as Jr. High Boys’ Basketball Coach was made by Joel Johnson with a second by Kristin Dutton. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Craig Allaman, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.

RESIGNATION

A motion to accept David Milroy’s resignation as HS Fresh-Soph Boys’ Basketball Coach was made by Debbie King with a second by Aaron Leary. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Craig Allaman, Kristin Dutton, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin and Joel Johnson. Nay – none

Adjourn

Craig Allaman made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:07 p.m. Aaron Leary seconded the motion. Roll Call: Aye – Dana Poole, Kristin Dutton, Debbie King, Aaron Leary, Hank Shimmin, Craig Allaman and Joel Johnson. Nay – none.
