City of Galesburg Tree Commission met February 11.
Here is the minutes as provided by the commission:
Meeting was called to order by Ann Pennington at 4:00 P.M.
Roll Call:
Present: Members: Ann Pennington, Millie Allen, Pat Trant and Director of Parks & Recreation, Tony Oligney-Estill
Absent: Jake Morgan, City Arborist-Ryan Creek
Minutes of January 14, 2019 where approved.
Arborist Report:
• There was no report for this meeting. The City Arborist has spent almost the entire month plowing snow and spreading salt.
Old Business:
• The Parks and Recreation Master Plan was adopted at the February 4th City Council Meeting. Tony is working on drafting a recommendation to create a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board that would absorb the Tree Commission, Golf Commission and Youth Commission as part of its duties.
• The tree inventory RFP was released, and all proposals are due February 20th. There will most likely be two companies submitting proposals, maybe three or more.
• The tree trunk on Irwin Street is scheduled to be removed sometime in the Spring of 2019. As it is a large trunk, there are several logistical factors to consider as well as the weather.
New Business:
• The Commission is recommending that four trees be planted at Lake Storey Softball Fields along all the baselines for Arbor Day. City staff will look at the area and see if there is room to plant these trees.
• The Commission was asked to review the Arboricultural Specifications Manual for its annual review. The last update was approved at the October 2018 meeting. Staff think the best time to review this document is in the winter when tree work is the slowest. Staff has asked for any edits or suggestions at the March meeting.
• The Commission was asked to review the City of Galesburg Urban Forest document which is the urban forest management plan. The last time this document was reviewed was March 4, 2004. Staff has asked for any edits or suggestions at the March meeting.
