The price of local government in 2016: City of Knoxville

The City of Knoxville budget was $5.64 million for its 2016 fiscal year, or $5,792 per household.

That's a decrease of 2.4 percent from 2015, when the city spent $5.77 million, or $5,932 per household.

Knoxville has 973 households and a population of 2,911.

Since 2001, the City of Knoxville budget has grown by 130.6 percent, from $2.44 million. The city population has fallen 19.1 percent over the same period, from 3,600.

Salaries accounted for 11.9 percent of city spending in 2016. Knoxville property taxpayers paid $670,420 for 16 full-time employees and 38 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 13 full-time employees and 16 part-time employees, and spent $617,774.
