City of Galesburg Youth Commission met November 8

Meeting 11

City of Galesburg Youth Commission met Nov. 8.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Chairman Sue Cunningham called the meeting to order at 4:53 p.m.

Present: Andy Bonis, Sue Cunningham, Cheryl Hager, Lindsey Powell and Sarah Wallenfelsz. Excused Absence: Judi Minor. Ex-Officios: Lauren Dynes and Julie Main.

Andy Bonis moved, seconded by Gene Rude, to approve the minutes from the October 11, 2018 meeting. The minutes were approved.

Public Comment None

Report Recreation Division

Lauren Dynes distributed flyers to the Youth Commission members for upcoming recreation programs including the following: swim lessons, lifeguard training, youth basketball tournament, Dungeons and Dragons character creation program, Lakeside open court event, Daddy Daughter Candyland Ball, and the Mermaid Experience. Sue Cunningham asked if scholarships were available for youth. Lauren said that will be looked into in the future.

Youth Extra Effort Award

Members were asked to encourage more nominations for the Youth Extra Effort Award. Gene Rude offered to help with this program as an honorary Youth Commission member.

Update Community Activities

Sue Cunningham said Discovery Depot has several upcoming events for November and December.

Goals

Members are to continue to think of people that would enjoy serving on the Youth Commission.

New Business

Sue Cunningham said that the Youth Commission structure may change. She is trying to find out more information from City Administration.

Julie Main said a new Associate Planner has been hired to replace her position. Julie is retiring from the City on December 14th. Becky Jollay will start on November 13th.

Sue Cunningham presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Gene Rude for all his volunteer work with the Youth Commission since the 1980’s. Gene said his life has been one of service and he thanked the members for this recognition.

Sue Cunningham said that the Youth Commission will not meet in December. She asked the members to attend a reception for Julie Main at City Hall on December 14th.

Andy Bonis moved, seconded by Sarah Wallenfelsz to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 5:27 p.m.
