City of Galesburg Youth Commission met Oct. 1.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Chairman Sue Cunningham called the meeting to order at 4:59 p.m.

Present: Andy Bonis, Sue Cunningham, Lindsey Powell and Sarah Wallenfelsz. Excused

Absences: Cheryl Hager and Judi Minor. Ex-Officios: Chelsea Moberg and Julie Main. Andy Bonis moved, seconded by Sarah Wallenfelsz, to approve the minutes from the September 13, 2018 meeting. The minutes were approved.

Public Comment

None

Report Recreation Division

Chelsea Moberg distributed flyers to the Youth Commission members for upcoming recreation programs including the following: pool open swim and swim lessons, nature center activities and the October haunted trail located behind Lakeside Swim Facility, youth basketball league and the Lakeside open court event, Mother Son Adventure Night, Daddy Daughter Candyland Ball, and a new event - Mermaid Experience.

Youth Extra Effort Award

Members were asked to encourage more nominations for the Youth Extra Effort Award. Staff will send the nomination form to the members for distribution. The members split up schools to provide the forms for teaching staff to complete.

Update Community Activities

There will be several trunk or treat activities for youth in October. The Spoon River Drive is this weekend and Country Corners also has fall youth activities.

Goals

There are four vacancies on the Youth Commission. Sue Cunningham asked staff to send the Board and Commission application to members to distribute to those that might be interested in serving on the Youth Commission. Members were reminded to think about assisting local organizations such as The Forgotten Initiative.

Channel 4 News may attend a future Youth Commission meeting.

Julie Main read a thank you note from Elizabeth Varner stating she appreciated the Certificate of Appreciation from the Youth Commission.

Gene Rude resigned from the Youth Commission last month. The members decided to move the November Youth Commission meeting to Seminary Estates to personally thank Gene for his years of service on the Youth Commission.

Andy Bonis moved, seconded by Lindsey Powell to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 5:14 p.m.
