Carl Sandburg College issued the following announcement on Oct. 23.
Already the undisputed Arrowhead Conference champions, the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team added “undefeated” to its name Tuesday night.
The Chargers finished off a perfect run through their league schedule with a 25-17, 25-17, 24-26, 25-15 win over Black Hawk on Sophomore Night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Sandburg (23-13, 8-0), which clinched the outright conference title last week, dropped six sets and never faced a fifth set in winning its first Arrowhead championship since 1990.
Josalyn Owens (Lincoln), one of five sophomores playing in their final home match, had team highs of 16 kills and three aces to lead Sandburg. Sophomore Hannah Thompson (West Prairie) had 11 kills, two aces and a team-best five digs.
The Chargers also got 39 assists from freshman setter Cora Vyhnanek (West Prairie), nine kills from freshman Peyton Bowman (West Prairie) and eight kills from sophomore Jordan Price (Fulton).
Sandburg looked poised for a sweep after the first two sets before the Braves (12-15, 3-5) battled back in the third. A 7-0 run gave Black Hawk an 18-10 lead, but the Chargers saved three set points to force a 24-all tie. The Braves, though, forced a fourth set after back-to-back kills from Mary Mitton.
Sandburg dominated the fourth, using five straight points on Owens’ serve to jump to a 6-1 lead.
The Chargers will close the regular season at the Parkland Invite on Friday and Saturday before defending their Region IV tournament title Nov. 3-4 on the campus of College of Lake County.
