Carl Sandburg Birthplace issued the following announcement on Oct. 18.

From Site Services Specialist for Bishop Hill & Carl Sandburg State Historic Sites Bryan Engelbrecht:

It is with deep regret that we announce Carl Sandburg State Historic Site will be closed except for scheduled events, as of Monday, October 22. Morgan Shaw, Site Technician for both Sites, who with myself and Site Superintendent Martha Downey, have been interpreting the Sandburg Site on weekends, is beginning a new career Monday outside of State government.

This combined with the loss of our two Seasonal staff members in Bishop Hill at the end of October, leaves only Martha and myself to cover both Sites. With this level of staffing, we cannot provide interpretation at the Sandburg Site until the Illinois Department of Natural Resources hires an employee specifically for it. We have been told by management at IDNR that the contractual position formerly held by Matt Swanson for Sandburg will be filled, but as of yet have not been provided an exact timeframe or job posting date. The Site will be open on November 4 at 2pm for the Illinois Humanities Bridgehouse Square Live Podcast Recording: Illinois Turns 200, and the 4pm November 11 Songbag Concert featuring Tom Irwin. The grounds to the Sandburg Site will remain accessible from Dawn to Dusk daily during the closure.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please contact Martha or myself by calling (309) 927-3345. You may also email us at martha.downey@illinois.gov or bryan.engelbrecht@illinois.gov. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes.
