West Central Community Unit School District 235 students suspended 226 times in a single school year

West Central Community Unit School District 235 reported 226 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 226 students during the year. That equates to 27.2 percent of the 831 students enrolled.

Of the 173 in-school suspensions, 134 were given to boys and 39 were given to girls, including 33 elementary or middle schoolers and 140 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 167 incidents. There were five incidents of violence without physical injury. For 165 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 53 out-of-school suspensions, including 22 elementary or middle schoolers and 31 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 40 incidents. There were 11 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 49 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
