The final piece to a six-year plan to reduce train traffic in Galesburg has officially opened.
On Wednesday, Gov. Bruce Rauner joined with Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn to unveil the East Main Street underpass.
The new underpass is the final part of the state’s efforts to reduce delays caused by train traffic. It joins the overpass on West Main Street, which was completed in 2012, and the Bickerdyke Bridge that opened in 2014.
“These projects have shown how teamwork can lead to solutions for problems that at one time might have seemed unfixable,” Blankenhorn said in a news release. “We look forward to working with more communities to advance their goals and make life better for residents and business.”
Construction of the East Main Street underpass started in October 2016. It routes U.S. 150 under the tracks just north of the BNSF rail yard. It was funded from a collaboration of federal, local and railroad funds.
