Galesburg FD responds to 107 fires in 2017

Galesburg Fire Department responded to 442 calls in 2017 - 9.4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Galesburg included 107 fires - 52 structure fires, 23 vehicle fires and 32 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $746,560 in fire loss - or about $6,977 per fire.

The department also received 333 false calls, including 14 malicious calls and 319 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Galesburg Fire Fighters Pension Fund, which has 42 active employees and 70 retired or inactive employees, was $1,655,052 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $16,718 for every fire in 2016.
