Sen. Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) declared April 21 Magic Day in Monmouth.
“I have been waiting for this moment all session,” Tracy said, referring to SR 1394 as she spoke on the Senate floor.
Magic Day is meant to commemorate the life of renowned illusionist William Mozart Nicol, who is also known by his stage name, "The Great Nicola."
“Nicola was a talented inventor and showman who devised innovative apparatuses in his Monmouth workshop that inspired the grand stage illusions performed by today's most celebrated magicians,” according to the resolution's synopsis.
Tracy said Magic Day was so important because Monmouth was the lifelong home of Nicola.
“The Great Nicola's travels delivered goodwill in the form of American entertainment to the far reaches of civilization,” Tracy said, adding that Nicola educated the Western world on Asia and Africa.
She concluded by noting that Nicola is honored at the Warren County Museum and is buried in Monmouth.
